Illustration and Visual Narrative - Mirror Mirror

Fairy tales are the stuff of imagination and dreams. They contain allegorical narratives (Aesop’s fables, etc) that serve as moral examples. It moulds, entertains and ultimately illustrates values.

You are to select a classical fairy tale or allegorical narrative and interpret it through illustrations. From the folk tale, fairy tale, legend, fable, or piece of classic literature, you must illustrate a few scenes from the narrative of your chosen work.

I've decided to go with Romeo and Juliet, since it is one of my favourite classic story of all times.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.

Characters :

Ruling house of Verona

• Prince Escalus is the ruling Prince of Verona
• Count Paris is a kinsman of Escalus who wishes to marry Juliet.
• Mercutio is another kinsman of Escalus, and a friend of Romeo.

House of Capulet

• Capulet is the patriarch of the house of Capulet.
• Capulet's wife is the matriarch of the house of Capulet.
• Juliet is the 13-year-old daughter of Capulet, and the play's female protagonist.
• Tybalt is a cousin of Juliet, and the nephew of Capulet's wife.
• The Nurse is Juliet's personal attendant and confidante.
• Peter, Sampson and Gregory are servants of the Capulet household.

House of Montague

• Montague is the patriarch of the house of Montague.
• Montague's wife is the matriarch of the house of Montague.
• Romeo is the son of Montague, and the play's male protagonist.
• Benvolio is Romeo's cousin and best friend.
• Abram and Balthasar are servants of the Montague household.

Others

• Friar Laurence is a Franciscan friar, and is Romeo's confidant.
• A Chorus reads a prologue to each of the first two acts.
• Friar John is sent to deliver Friar Laurence's letter to Romeo.
• An Apothecary who reluctantly sells Romeo poison.

For my story, I've decided to set it in a post-apocalyptic era where the world is dominated by cyborgs and humans are fighting to survive. The city is named Verona, same as the classic storyline. I tried to keep the same names in my adaption. And since that they both are star-crossed lovers, I made my Juliet a cyborg and Romeo is the human trying to survive.

Similar to Terminator, I named the artificial intelligence network as Escalus, since in the actual story, Prince Escalus is the ruler of Verona.

Digital Design - Assignment 2 - Return to Sender


Innovate 4 seasons to celebrate this part of the world that you are in that does not have the typical 4 seasons one would typically refer to.

I could be its weather or state of affairs or anything else that you may creatively sum up or come up with.


And so, I came up with ;
1 - Flood season
2 - Durian season
3 - Badminton season
4 - Mandarin orange season

And I've done two so far.

Did my initial (online name) on the images, something I learnt from Ms.Maria in Visual Culture in my Foundation years.
To prevent people from stealing =P
Just in case.

But they can actually photoshop it out. LOL

Mr.Jeffrey taught us to make GIF images on Photoshop.

And I came up with this HAHAHA!

Chok : A popular term in Hong Kong that normally refers to an intense or powerful emotion displayed through one's eyes.

One good example would be Sasuke, who's best known for glaring.

Metamorphosis - Altered

Having to watch Tim Burton's Corpse Bride recently (Kayla played it in class),
I was inspired by the movie whereby I noticed the corpse has a paler/purple-ish tone to her skin.

And coincidentally, the corpse bride dissapeared into hundreds of butterflies at the end of the movie.
Which is the same as my concept :)

Overall, I touched up the messy parts that I overlooked in the dress. Added a base colour for her hair (only noticable in the first panel). And I made her skin slightly paler/grey-ish tinge because there isn't any life left in her.

Which is why vampires are pale white and ice cold :D
